I don't consider overpopulation to justify mass murder at all. "Only commited mass murder"? He wiped out half of all life in the universe for Pete's sake! That alone makes him a Complete Monster. As for losing his home planet, that doesn't make him tragic, because he was already an evil bastard even then because he wanted to kill half the population.
