Tauriel is an original character in The Hobbit film series and is the series' female lead. She acts as a love interest to Prince Kili, the nephew of Thorin Oakenshield and Fili's younger brother.
Tauriel is a free-spirited elf who wishes to help others. While Thranduil believes his kingdom should be isolated from the rest of the world, this contradicts to what Tauriel believes. She believes that the elves should be involved with other affairs and to fight for her rights. Most of the time, Tauriel doesn't need a man to save her, as she is able to get out almost in any of the situations they encounter. However, this contradicts as Kili has to run in to save her from Bolg, as well as Legolas. She easily recognized he growing evils of the world and the need to rid Middle-earth of them instead of being isolated.
Tauriel was born in Mirkwood, around the year TA 2341 to unknown parents. When she was very young, her parents were killed in an orc raid. Afterwards, Thranduil took her in, as Legolas stated that he protected and favored her like a daughter.
