Ophelia Frump is a supporting character from The Addams Family. She is the flighty flower child older sister of Morticia Addams, who is the "white sheep of the family".
Background[]
Ophelia is at least slightly crazed, bedecked with flowers, and wearing a long dress, is a tribute to her namesake in Shakespeare's Hamlet, who in her madness gathers flowers by the river until she falls in, at which point, weighted down by her sodden dress, sinks and drowns. She debut and occasionally appeared nameless in Charles Addams's original cartoons, such as eating with the family, asking her mother if she can borrow the broomstick, or having an ugly young man proclaim his love for her ("There's enough hate in my heart for both of us."). When she was adapted for the 1964 television series, she was named Ophelia basing her off and taking inspiration from her namesake in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Ophelia was made the sister of Morticia and was even played by the same actresses, Carolyn Jones. Except for looking identical, she Ophelia nothing like her sister, being closer to being "normal" because she likes to cook normal food and is often very cheery and upbeat. However, she is a bit moody and can be quite gloomy when sad. She was introduced in the two-part, second-season episode "Morticia's Romance", it’s revealed that Gomez Addams was originally engaged to Ophelia in an arranged marriage, but when he sees the then-22-year-old Morticia, they fall in love with each other. The flowers entwined in Ophelia's hair actually have roots that travel down into her foot, and the foot raises when one of the flowers is tugged on. She sings in three-part harmony and has a love of judo that enables her to flip men (usually Gomez) onto their backs. She is an occasional guest in the Addams home, usually visiting them after being heartbroken by her various lovers.
