Kara Danvers, born Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, is a major character in the Arrowverse. She is the main protagonist of the television series Supergirl. After the series was adopted by the CW, Kara has appeared as a supporting character in The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

History[]

Kara Zor-El was born into the esteemed House of El on the planet Krypton in 1966 to Alura Zor-El, a judicator, on Krypton and Zor-El, a scientist. She had a very close relationship with her maternal aunt, Astra, who treated Kara as if she were her own daughter due to not having any of her own. Kara and Astra would often name the stars together. Sometime after Kara's cousin Kal-El was born, she used to change his diapers. However, after Astra discovered that Krypton was on the verge of destruction, Alura told Astra she believed her and would do everything she could to save their dying world, but with democracy.

However, with Krypton on the verge of destruction, Zor-El and Jor-El built only two starships to save their children. Kara was to be sent to the planet Earth, where she would watch over Kal-El. Before she departed, Alura gave Kara her necklace and gave a heartfelt goodbye with both of her parents. However, her pod ran off course due to the shockwave of Krypton's destruction and landed her into the Phantom Zone, where she remained trapped there for twenty-years. After Kara's pod somehow got loose, she finally made it out of the Phantom Zone, but emerged as the twelve-year-old girl she was when she was stranded in the Phantom Zone. By the time she got to earth, her cousin Kal-El had grown up to become the Earth's protector, Superman.

Wanting Kara to have the same normal childhood he did, Kal-El introduced Kara to the Danvers, who helped Superman understand his powers. Eliza reassured Kara that she knew she wasn't her biological mother but promised that she would always have a home.

Kara also met the Danvers' young daughter, Alexandra. Alex felt uneasy with having Kara as her adoptive sister, especially when they went to school together. Jeremiah later gave Kara a pair of lead glasses to help her with adjusting. Kara and Alex's relationship became strained with each other when Jeremiah Danvers joined the D.E.O. in exchange for the director, Hank Henshaw to leave Kara alone. They had grown apart by the time they reached high school. During their childhood, Kara and Alex's father Jeremiah supposedly died in a plane crash. However, in truth, Jeremiah had been killed by Hank Henshaw when he defended a Green Martian, J'onn J'onzz. Before his death, Jeremiah asked J'onn to take care of his daughters before seemingly passing away.

Meanwhile, back home, Kara and Alex eventually rekindled their relationship when they helped sole their friend Kenny Li's murder together and Kara saved her from the corrupt sheriff.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Kryptonian Physiology: Kara Zor-El is one of the most powerful beings in the entire multiverse who originated from a race that lived on the planet, Krypton. She became a resourceful hero, using both her powers and her strong will. However, like all Kryptonains, Kara has no powers when living on Krypton or coming to Argo City because both locations absorbed the solar energy of a red star. The same principals are relied upon when Kara is exposed to the energy of a blue star, which will render her powerless like a red sun. Instead, Kara relied on the average abilities of comparable with that of a human. However, when she is living on Earth or in the proximity of a yellow sun or at least, the equivalent of yellow solar energy, Kara is granted superpowers. The only weapon capable of harming her is kryptonite, a radioactive rock found on Kara's homeworld.
    • Solar energy absorption: When under the effects of a yellow sun, Kara gains immeasurable powers and incredible strength. However, Kara can lose her powers if she exhausts her power. After her fight with the Red Tornado, Kara lost most of her powers due to her exhaustion fighting the robot. According to Harry Wells, if Kara or any other Kryptonian takes in excessive amounts of solar energy, then it would act like a cancer and eventually kill her. This is precisely what happened with Kara's Earth-X counterpart, who exhausted herself with too much solar radiation intake. After her battle with Red Daughter, she is shown to be able to take the solar energy out of plants to recharge herself.

It was very difficult for her at first, but Kara managed to master this power if she focused on one single sound. By the time she was an adult, Kara managed to master the power by focusing on a specific sound. When she is supergirl, Kara often listens in on other people's conversations to see which one poses as a threat. She also used this power in order to hear for Alex's voice, which is how she was able to rescue her sister from a corrupted sheriff and later, Kara's aunt Astra. However, if exposed to sound dampening technoloy, Kara feels pain and the screams of Silver Banshee emitted a sound sou loud that it caused Kara's ears to bleed.
        • Enhanced Vision: Kara's vision has been enhanced greater than that of a normal human and first manifested when Kara was starting school on Earth. She was overwhelmed with her new surroundings and started seeing the other students' skeletons and overhearing everyone with her enhanced hearing. To make things easier for her, Jeremiah gave Kara lead-lined glasses so that way she would not be overwhelmed by her X-ray vision.
          • Heat Vision: Kara can emit beams of heat from her eyes, which she normally uses to burn things in place.
          • Microscopic vision: Kara is able to see microscopic objects or people. She can also see people from miles away and uses this to catch criminals or save a life.
