Gollum, originally known as Sméagol (or Trahald), is a major antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium.
He is a Stoor Hobbit who was corrupted and transformed into a monstrous creature by the One Ring, which he calls "my precious". After losing the Ring to Bilbo Baggins, he hunts it for decades, eventually becoming the guide for Bilbo's nephew, Frodo, to destroy the Ring at Mount Doom. His all-consuming need for the Ring eventually leads him to betray Frodo and inadvertently destroy the Ring along with himself. He is the archenemy of Samwise Gamgee.
