Sam was born and raised in Pontypandy, Wales. He is employed as a senior firefighter in the Pontypandy Fire Service.

- Some sources claim that Sam's surname is Peyton-Jones. However, Sam's surname was never Peyton; that idea comes from an episode of Series 1, where he names an invention the "Samuel Patent Potato Picker".
