Atina is a minor character from the anime and manga series Ulysses 31. She is a young Zotrian woman who is Heratos's assistant and adoptive daughter.

Story[]

Atina is first heard on some radio device contacting Heratos, who is outside trying to set up some radars in anticipation for a few guests who are supposed to arrive on their planet. When the call is turned off, the voices of the gods, who contact Heratos, are heard. They offer to restore his sight, but first they demand he stop the guests, which are Ulysses, Telemachus, Yumi, and Nono, from coming or else they threaten to destroy both him and Atina. Once the gods have left, Heratos falls to the ground. Atina comes out and runs towards him, asking him if he's alright. He tells her he's fine and that the fact he tripped just has to do with advanced age.

Atina also contacts Ulysses and the others on their spaceship, The Odyssey's monitor. Even though the picture on the screen is somewhat clear through the static, Yumi believes she sees a fellow Zotrian. Atina is glad to find someone who is of her kind and Yumi, Telemachus, and Nono ask Ulysses to head to the planet where she and Heratos are, so they all can meet. He obliges and off they go to their destination.

On that planet, Atina looks up at the sky and sees The Odyssey descend and land. As the ship's door opens, Yumi comes running towards Atina, Yumi leaps in her arms, and they hug. The others follow and when Telemachus sneezes to get Yumi's attention, she introduces her to her friends. They're all pleased to meet her and Heratos, especially Nono, who falls head over heels for her and the others are amused.

Atina gives a tour to Telemachus, Yumi, and Nono of a museum where Heratos is a zoologist. One particular exhibit shows a framed, simple, crude drawing of what appears to be a rocket ship. In another room, Heratos tells Ulysses a story about how he and Atina met. Years ago, he entered a space ship on which the drawing is based. He looked around to see if anyone was on board, but it seemed deserted. That is, until he found Atina, who was a little girl when she was found in a pod on the ship. Somehow, it appears she became an orphan. After Heratos picks her up and cradles her, the voices of the gods are heard and they take away Heratos's sight, making him go blind.

Following the flashback, Heratos tells Ulysses that he has the map that includes the route that will take Ulysses and his shipmates through the Galactic Glaciers and to the Black Sphere. Heratos tells Ulysses and the others that they'll spend the night staying at his and Atina's place. Atina is thrilled about them continuing their trip the next day and asks why he doesn't come along with them. He says it isn't for him, due to his old age.

The next day, Ulysses and his comrades get ready to leave as Heratos hands him the map. When Yumi asks why Atina doesn't join them, she says she'd love to, but she has to stay behind with her adoptive father so that he can keep her company, as he is her only family.

After the crew leaves, Atina returns to the museum where Heratos is. Heratos asks Atina if they left yet and she says they took off in their ship. Feeling guilty about what he has done, he tells her he has a confession to make: He actually gave them the map to the Graveyard of Wrecks and Hopes instead of the map he had planned to give, and Ulysses, and the others, are unaware of this. When Atina asks why he would do such a thing, he tells her he was forced to by the gods and if he had refused, he and Atina would've been harmed.

They get in their own ship to follow them and try to avert disaster from happening. She says, "Let's hope this old ship still flies", and surely, and fortunately enough, it still does. Heratos is remorseful for what he has done, but Atina tells him she needs his help.

Meanwhile, Ulysses and his crew resume their journey when they notice the ship that's similar to the drawing in the museum and the same one where Heratos came across Atina years earlier. Telemachus, Yumi, and Nono then leave the Odyssey and run towards the other spaceship, entering it. Atina tries contacting them to let them know about the danger that awaits them, but there's no answer as they had already left. Heratos then contacts Ulysses, who explains what he did and tells him that he, and Atina, are going to try to save him, and the others.

Ulysses then contacts the three others and tells them to return to their ship, but Telemachus says that he and his friends have to try to save Heratos and Atina, who have gone off course, and are headed towards the Graveyard of Wrecks and Hopes. Heratos's and Atina's ship stops functioning properly due to damaged circuits. Ulysses meets up with Telemachus, Yumi, and Nono as he tells them he has a plan to keep Heratos and Atina's ship from having a collision. They get back to the Odyssey and they manage to get Heratos's and Atina's ship back on the right course. Just when it seems like a near disaster is about to occur, disaster is averted successfully, and Heratos and Atina are saved.

Everybody cheers and Telemachus asks his dad if he thinks they'll still be alright. He says yes, as he believes where they're going, one day, they'll find a planet that's full of bees and flowers.
